The Quicktime Embed Method of iPhone Video Display

In the last two posts I have been busily researching different ways video posted on a Web page could also be viewable/playable on your iPhone's built-in Safari Web browser.

Because the iPhone doesn't support Flash this is not quite as easy and straightforward as it sounds, however with directions provided by the site "CreativeTech Tips" I have seen for myself that it is possible to do using Quicktime Embeds. (You can also use the Blip.tv method or iTunes embed)

Skipping to the chase, the Quicktime embed instructions I followed can be found here:

You will need Quicktime Pro but from then on it's a pretty straightforward "copy and paste" job. I only made two deviations from their instructions. First, for some reason the code generated by Quicktime Pro wanted to present my video at the huge size of 853 pixels wide x 496 pixels tall but it was a simple matter of changing that value in three places to a more reasonable 480 x 270.

Second, if you see black bars to the right and left of your video (or at the top and bottom) then the simple fix is to add, in my case, 17 pixels to the height value...so 480 x 270 became 480 x 279.

I should also point out that the Quicktime embed code which worked perfectly on a page on my own site did not work when pasted here into a Wordpress blog entry....so there's still a bit more research to do.

I believe the issue has to do with three lines of code that the Quicktime embed method asks that you put in the "header" section at the top of your Web page. While you can edit the header code for a Wordpress blog it will then apply that change to every page on your blog and that could be a problem....I haven't tested it.
